Masking

Masking is the technique of applying an opaque colored pencil over an existing color to partially or completely conceal it.

Unlike glazing, which allows underlying colors to remain visible, masking uses opacity to reduce the visibility of the color beneath.

Successful masking depends on both the opacity of the pencil and its ability to adhere to the existing layers. Even a highly opaque pencil may mask poorly if it cannot deposit enough color over the surface.
